Reconditioning older leather

4 min read

If your leather feels stiff, looks faded, or has lost its sheen, it's not done — it's just thirsty. A 20-minute reconditioning brings it back.

What you'll need

  • Saddle soap (Fiebing's or similar)
  • Soft cotton cloths — a clean rag for each step
  • Leather conditioner (mink oil, neatsfoot, or a balm)
  • Leather dye if you want to refresh color (optional)
  • Step by step

    1. Clean. Damp cloth, work in saddle soap in small circles. Wipe clean with a second damp cloth. Let dry completely (a few hours).

    2. Condition. Apply conditioner with a clean rag. Work it in evenly, including the back of the leather if possible. Let it sit overnight.

    3. Buff. With a clean dry cloth, buff the surface to bring back the sheen.

    4. Optional: re-dye. If color has faded, a thin coat of leather dye in the same shade refreshes it. Test on the back first.
