Installing leather mud flaps

Read this all the way through before you start drilling. If you have questions about any step, call us before you put a bit through your fender — fenders aren't cheap.

Rear fender

Place the bike securely on its side stand. If your bike has fender tips, you'll need to remove them.

Locate the center of the bottom of the rear fender. Make a mark approximately a quarter-inch from the bottom of the fender.

Using a 9/64 metal drill bit, carefully drill through the fender. Make a starting punch first so the bit doesn't walk down the fender.

Make two more marks, one on each side of the center hole, where bolts will hold the mud flap. Drill those too.

Place the rear mud flap beneath the fender, align the center hole with the hole in the fender, insert a bolt through, add a washer, thread on a lock nut, tighten.

Align the right side of the mud flap so the leather completely covers the hole in the fender. Push the flap firmly toward the rear — this is how that side will look once installed, so make sure it looks good. Hold it in place and drill through the fender hole into the mud flap.

Insert bolt, washer, lock nut. Tighten.

Repeat for the left side.

Front fender

Same process as the rear, with one caveat: there's much less room to work. Be especially careful when drilling that the bit doesn't walk and put a hole somewhere it doesn't belong.

Mud flap procedures vary slightly by bike. We have specific instruction sets for Indian Motorcycles and Yamaha Roadstars that ship with those orders. If you have an unusual bike or any uncertainty, call us first.
