Installing floorboard trim

Congratulations on the floorboard trim. Like the saddlebag fringe, this is a 30-minute job with a tube of Barge cement and a little patience.

How it goes on

The trim is one piece, approximately 24 inches long. Each end attaches to the inside of the floorboard, between the floorboard and the bike — the two ends aren't designed to touch, so there will be a few inches of uncovered floorboard that nobody can see.

Drape the trim around the floorboard to plan where the first end starts. Then spread a moderate coat of contact cement around the floorboard where the trim will go (use a Q-tip), and apply a thin bead to the top of the trim where it'll attach.

Wait 7–8 minutes for the glue to tack up. Then press the first end of the trim against the floorboard, working it around until the whole length is pressed in. Adjust the top of the trim up or down as you go to keep it a uniform distance from the floorboard's top edge — you're making sure it looks nice and even.

Watch the cement

The glue can become so tacky that where the trim touches it may be difficult to adjust. If you line it up incorrectly, peel that portion off and lay it straight. Re-stick should grab just as well if you do it immediately.

Let the bond cure for 2 hours before showing it off.

Worried about removing it later? You can peel it off cleanly. But really, why would you want your bike to look like everyone else's?
