Breaking in a new piece of leather

Brand-new leather is firm and dry. That's intentional — full-grain bridle leather wants to soften over time, and it'll do it best if you ease it in.

Day one

Wipe down with a damp (not wet) cloth to remove any dust from the shop. Let it air-dry for an hour out of direct sunlight.

Days two through five

Apply a thin coat of mink oil or saddle soap with a clean cotton rag. Work it in with your fingers. Don't soak it — a thin coat is plenty. Let it absorb overnight.

Week one

Mount it on your bike and ride. The leather will mold to your tank or fender shape over the first 200–300 miles. If you see any creases that bother you, work them with your fingers; don't try to flatten with heat.
